Today's Leadership Insight - Taking Ownership

No matter what stage you're at in the game, take ownership of what you have. Leaders never put the cart in front of the horse. They set goals for themselves, and strive to reach those goals with all their actions. They never take shortcuts, and they own whatever their position may be.

You hear a lot about people making false claims of success and income, and these people fall into the short-sighted category. They fail to realize they're not promoting an opportunity, a product, or a compensation plan. They're promoting themselves. So, if a relationship with a new prospect is built on a lie, this person loses all credibility and the prospect will join someone who cares about their needs, goals and values. Just looking to make a quick buck is not the name of the game.

If you're at square one in your business, own it!

Look at the top earners in the network marketing industry. They didn't start on the top. They started exactly where you are...at square one. But they set goals, envisioned themselves at the top, and that's exactly where they got.

They made themselves attractive leaders that others wanted to associate with. They owned their position and continued to take ownership as they made their mark on the network marketing industry.

Today, evaluate where you're at in your business, where you'd like to be in one month, three months, six months, and a year from now, and determine how you're going to make it happen. Don't overthink things too long. Literally envision your life after you reach your goals, then TAKE ACTION!

1. Daily Visualization and Mediation of Goals - In order to achieve great things, you literally need to see yourself doing it. Simply thinking about it is not enough. Paint a mental picture of how your life, as well as the lives of those around you, will change once your goals are met. Then, take that mental picture and put it down on paper. Envision yourself as a better leader for achieving that goal.

2. Income-Producing Activity - The tasks you complete today may not bring income instantly, but they may bring it tomorrow or the next day. The efforts you put forth can lead to great things in the future, but you'll never know what sort of potential lays in those efforts if you don't take action and produce something that can lead to success. Leaders realize that any sort of income-producing activity is better than waiting for the perfect time and opportunity. Leaders make moves, they don't wait.

3. Work on Yourself - As I mentioned, the development of leadership is an ongoing process. Therefore, you must allow yourself a certain amount of time each day to work on your personal awareness. This can consist of any sort of self-improvement or self-development activities you enjoy. Reading a great book, watching an inspirational video, and exercise are just a few examples of how you can work on yourself.

4. Mastermind with Other Leaders - You may have heard the phrase "Your net worth is equal to your network." This means you want to spend your time associating and surrounding yourself with other leaders who can aid in your growing process. Surrounding yourself with naysayers will get you nowhere. Leaders learn from one another, therefore it's an imperative step in your development to find people who share the same insights as you.

5. Put Yourself In a Position to Win at All Levels - No matter where you're at in life and in business, own it. Don't be ashamed of it. By doing this, you set yourself up for long-term success. Those who are putting themselves in position to lose and fail are the ones who are making false claims about their income or spending their day spamming their business opportunity to anyone who will listen while providing no value to their communities.

Today, make an effort to add these five activities to your daily routine. Top leaders are in constant search of ways to become better. They never stop developing themselves, and they never put a cap on what they can offer the world.

Three Crucial Necessities For Running a Successful Online Business

Whenever any one opens up their doors and is officially “open for business,” the ultimate goal is always the same: To be successful.

Success can be defined in many different ways. Most people equate success with money, but running your own business can also help you be successful in terms of no longer having to answer to a boss, fighting traffic to get to work on time, or trading precious time for tiny wages.

The Most Important Business Lesson I Ever Learned

My tenure in network marketing has been all about learning. As an entrepreneur, your primary duty is to become a student, and remain one for the rest of your life. It’s the only way you’re going to get better.

If you wanted to become a successful professional golfer, your time would be spent on the driving range and on the course, fine-tuning your swing and mentally preparing yourself for competitive play. You would gain knowledge, learn from your mistakes, and practice until you reached a level where you could compete.

In business, it’s no different. Each day, you must learn something new and apply it to your craft. Don’t expect EVERYTHING to work the first time you try it. It’s a healthy business practice to try new things. And if they don’t work, fine-tune them until they do. In order to be successful in business, just as in any other endeavor, you must practice until you reach a level where success can be obtained.

It’s all about giving yourself the education you deserve.

In my studies, I’ve absorbed some outstanding knowledge that I put to use every single day. Mental preparation, self-organization, networking, leadership, accountability, and goal-setting are just a few traits I’ve been able to improve upon and develop daily.

When it comes to marketing, I came across one quote that completely changed the way I did business. It comes from the great Perry Marshall, and it goes as follows:

“Nobody who bought a drill actually wanted a drill. They wanted a hole. Therefore, if you want to sell drills, you should advertise information about making holes – NOT information about drills!”

When I found myself struggling and wonder why I couldn’t find success in my MLM opportunity, that one quote opened my eyes. If you’re struggling to find network marketing success, re-read that quote, and think about how you’ve been building your business.

Old-school MLM techniques tell new distributors to make a list of 100 people they know, hold parties at their homes and hotels, talk to everyone in a 3-foot radius, hand out CDs, DVDs, and magazines, and buy outdated leads and cold-call them until you’re blue in the face.

Newer MLM techniques revolve around Pay-per-Click advertising, social media, articles, press releases, search engine optimization, banners, videos, and more.

The method you choose to market your business is irrelevant if you’re advertising the drill instead of the hole. Because the likelihood is, when you put these techniques into action, you’re not pushing the right buttons with the people you speak to.

People don’t buy a drill because they want a drill. They buy a drill because they want a hole.

Comparatively, people don’t join a network marketing opportunity because they want a network marketing opportunity. They join because they want a means to an end. They want to make money. They want to leave their job and work from home. They want to stop trading their time for wages. They want a better quality of life for themselves and their families.

There are hundreds of reasons why someone will join you and your opportunity. It’s all relative to your prospect’s goals. But if you’re only taking the time to shove your business in their face and not digging deep enough to find out WHY your opportunity would be beneficial to them, you’ll never discover what those goals are, and you’ll continue to spin your wheels.

The $9.92 Commission Check That Made Me Leave My MLM Company

I was involved in an MLM company for two years when I decided to go a different direction. I was paying a monthly fee to keep my business up and running, but the tiny commission checks that my network marketing opportunity paid me simply weren’t making ends meet.

I had a reasonable amount of success in my network marketing opportunity. The best thing I took away from my business was knowledge and experience. This has been very useful in the business I’m currently building, although my current business model is altogether different except for the fact that leadership, training, and expansion of knowledge are crucial keys to success.

If you’re a veteran to network marketing, you know one of the biggest letdowns is opening a check from your company and having it be so tiny, it doesn’t even fill your gas tank halfway. And if you’re new to the industry, this is something you have to be ready for. It’s your business, and you get out of it what you put into it.

I was on the fence about staying with my MLM opportunity, and there were a lot of factors pulling me in different directions. I had put a lot into my business, and I didn’t want to throw in the towel. On the other hand, the leadership in my opportunity seemed to vanish, and the so-called “training” calls were nothing more than hype and dollar figures.

I started to feel like a math teacher who becomes frustrated with one of her students because they always provide the right answer, but can never provide the way they obtained that answer. I was constantly being told that I’d be making handfuls and stacks of money on every call I listened to. But these people NEVER told me how to do it. I was left to my own ideas and solutions.

I wanted to quit my “9 to 5” job and go full-time in the industry and pour my time, heart, and soul into my business. But the tiny commission checks weren’t allowing me to do so. And because I was confined to a J-O-B five, sometimes six days a week, I couldn’t devote the time necessary to justify leaving my job behind.

So I was at a crossroads…stay the course or start a new business I had been researching?

Then, I opened the mail one day, and a commission check had arrived from my company. I opened the check, and the amount of the check made the decision for me. The check was in the amount of $9.92.

It was at that point that I knew I could never reach the goals I had set for myself if I was getting a check for under $10. I knew it was time to make a move.

So I quit MLM and started a brand new opportunity. And I could not be happier with the decision I made.

In my new opportunity, I found exactly what you need to succeed in this industry: Leadership, training, and a chance to build a business that generates money in a much quicker fashion. DON'T LISTEN TO IT!

While everyone is entitled to their opinion, YOU, as a leader, are just as entitled to ignore their opinion. 99% of the time, these opinions are construed while having no information about your ventures, ideas, and plans. Close-minded thinkers have become such slaves to their comfort zone that any idea that doesn't fit their daily pattern of life is too good to be true.

Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and countless other leaders practiced open- minded thinking. And if they hadn't, think of the things we'd be without today.

Your mission for today is to focus on the positive things that will help you reach your goals. Ignore the naysayers who try to crush your psyche. Remember...those with ill-conceived opinions are not putting money in your bank account. They're not adding to your leadership potential.

Keep a watchful eye on those who are taking advantage of what you have to offer them, and do everything in your power to surround yourself with people who share the same ideas as you. This will help you grow as a leader, and help all those who follow you grow as well.

Don't Just Play the Game...Play the Game to Win.

A statement like this very closely relates to the sports world. When you think of the most competitive and successful figures in their respected sport, there's not the least shred of doubt that they are leaders.

Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time. Leader. He played the game to win, not just to play. This truth was evident in the way he would take control of a game in the waning minutes. His teammates rallied around him and believed they could get the job done with him leading the charge. There was no doubt #23 was going to step into the spotlight and get the job done.

John Elway...former Denver Broncos QB. Led the Broncos to comebacks in so many clutch situations, it's hard to fathom the amount of ice water running through his veins. But with Elway at the helm, the Broncos knew they were never out of it. Why? Because Elway believed he'd bring his team back. Every single time. He played to win.

Tiger Woods...arguably the best golfer today, and most likely will end up the best golfer of all time. His mental toughness and focus consistently puts him at the top of the leaderboard (British Open not withstanding). Why? Because Tiger doesn't think about the downside...he thinks about the upside, then makes it happen! He stares down a 15-foot putt that needs to drop and doesn't think about what will happen if it doesn't. He sees it going in the hole. He plays to win.

Pat Summitt...greatest Women's Basketball coach of all-time. Winningest coach at the collegiate level, both men and women's. A genuine leader. She leads her team onto the court with confidence, and the players are infected by it. This leads to win after win after win. To consistently do what Summitt has done, year after year, is nothing short of extraordinary. She plays to win.

Today, as you enhance your business and leadership potential, remember that it's not enough to just play the game. Those who just play the game are a distant memory tomorrow.

Play the game to win, and you set yourself up for legendary things to happen. Jordan, Elway, Woods, Summitt, and countless others play the game to win on a daily basis.

Do the same. Be the leader that steps up when it matters.

The First Installment of 'The Marketing Manifesto' - A Weekly Tip to Improve Your Business

For the inaugural 'Marketing Manifesto' tip, it's all about one word...

Consistency.

You've got your business up and running, your website is ready to accept traffic, and you're raring to start churning out results. So, the big question becomes, "How do I start getting traffic?"

There are dozens of highly-effective, traffic-driving marketing techniques you can take advantage of. The list includes, but is not limited to, Pay-per-Click Advertising, Articles, Press Releases, Videos, Banner Ads, E-zine Ads, Print Ads, Forum Marketing, Social Media Marketing, Blogs, MyStory Marketing, and several others.

So you've got your list of choices. Now, there's two things you want to consider:

1) How much of a marketing budget do I have?
2) Which marketing efforts will I strongly excel with?

If you're just starting out, Pay-per-Click might not be the best method because there's a lot to learn to make it work for you. If you're budget is low, PPC will end up costing you an arm and a leg until you learn to use it properly. Take it from a guy who paid the PPC 'stupid tax,' it's not worth the headache. If you are looking to delve into PPC right off the bat, I highly recommend you pick up Mike Dillard's Pay-Per-Click Domination course first.

Here's the biggest favor you can do for yourself: Pick 2-3 marketing efforts and MASTER THEM!

This is where consistency comes into play.

Where most new marketers drop the ball is experimenting with every marketing technique that's available, then pushing them off to the side when they don't get desired results.

FACT: Writing one article and hoping it drives boatloads of traffic to your landing pages will never happen.

You need to consistently add relevant content to whatever marketing effort you decide to pursue. This is how you establish 'guru' or 'expert' status. In addition, this is how you improve and develop your skill set. As the old saying goes, "Practice makes perfect."

It's all about consistency. Choose which methods you want to market your business with, then work at them until you see results. Once you've mastered that skill set and you're happy with your results, move on to another marketing method and master that one. Pretty soon, you'll have a complete arsenal of marketing knowledge and weaponry.

Take the Time...

In network marketing, a distributor in any company is only as good as the leadership he or she surrounds themselves with. In today's fast-paced, constantly-changing world, some people simply don't take the time to help others reach their goals.

Big mistake.

Think about any scenario in your life where you were rushed or ignored. Being sat at a restaurant, then being completely ignored by the wait staff is the example that comes to my mind. How does it make you feel when you can't get anyone's attention for an extended period of time simply to get a refill of water?

It's not fun. You usually look at your dining mates and grow angrier as each waiter or waitress flies by you in a hurry.

Now, think about your prospects and team members the same way. Whether they're new to your opportunity or seasoned, one fact still remains:

They joined YOU.

And if you're not there to help them when they need it, listen to their concerns, or provide constructive criticism to help them develop, they're going to give you the equivalent of not leaving a tip...they're going to leave you and join someone else who does take the time to help them when they need it.

Sometimes, it can be as simple as saying, "Great job." Other times, you may have to dive in deeper. Regardless of how much time it takes, simply taking the time to support those who follow you will make you into a stronger leader.

Today, do something for a member of your team or one of your followers that truly makes an impact on their life...and expect nothing in return. Do this, and watch the world begin to change around you.

How Do You Measure a Personal Level of Success?

One of the most frequently asked questions in regards to the network marketing industry is, “How successful are you?”

This question has always struck me as confusing. Sure, people want to know you’ve been able to do something with your business before they decide to join. But even if you were making thousands of dollars per day, that doesn’t mean they’re going to as well.

Personal dedication, commitment, and accountability to your goals will determine whether you will be successful in your business, not the success your sponsor has had.

A major issue not only with the MLM industry, but society as a whole, is the fact that so many people equate success to money. Human beings are very material by nature. If we see someone who has a big house and a fancy car, it’s obvious that person is successful, right?

But what we may not know is that person may be completely miserable. Sure, they may have all the nice toys and comforts of wealth, but they may have to work 80 hours a week and have no time to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Therefore, they don’t consider themselves a success.

On the other hand, a person might not have a sports car in the driveway or a 4,000 square-foot house to sleep in, but they’re also not confined to a daily work schedule that forces them to trade in valuable time for miniscule wages. As a society, we’d probably look at this person as unsuccessful, or “against-the-grain.” But on a personal level, that person might feel like the most successful person in the world.

Success is not all about money. Money is a by-product. People don’t work to acquire money because they want money. They work to acquire money so they can obtain the things in life that money can buy. These are the things that make them happy. And happiness is the fundamental key to success.

As Perry Marshall says, “People who buy a drill don’t want a drill. They want a hole.”

In order to find success, you need to set goals for yourself. For example, let me summarize why I’m successful.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve never been a fan of working to make someone else rich. I was trading time for wages and all I had to show for it was a pencil-whipped paycheck at the end of the week.

So I established a goal of working for myself, building a business on my terms, not answering to an unqualified boss while being chained to a desk, and assuring my efforts would contribute to MY wealth…not someone else’s.

I then reached a point where I was forced to evaluate my situation. I’m well-educated, experienced, and own a leadership skill set that can be used to coach, mentor, and help others accomplish the goals they’ve set for themselves.

But, I wasn’t putting these skills to work at my 9 to 5. I was becoming a slave to the system, and becoming far too dependent on the paycheck that, while it kept me afloat, made me miserable and could disappear without notice.

So when I finally decided it was time to put my education to work and start injecting myself into the fibers of the network marketing industry full-time, I knew I had reached my goal. I knew I was a success.

Why? Because I reached my goal. I was no longer forced to trade my time for wages and answer to a boss who had no idea what he was doing. I was no longer forced to fight a tedious commute to get to a place that made me completely miserable.

I was free to start building my own empire, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.

The lesson to be learned is this: When you’re looking to join a network marketing opportunity, consider the many variables that constitute a person’s success before deciding whether you want to sign up with them. And remember, they might not be setting the world on fire…yet. And you won’t be either…at least when you first get started.

You want to find someone who’s willing to work with you and genuinely cares about your success. You’re looking for a leader…someone who will be there to help you reach your own personal goals for success.

Think about it: If you equated success to money, asked someone if they were successful, and got a reply of “OF COURSE! I’M MAKING TONS OF MONEY,” then later find out they WEREN’T, how would that make you feel? This means the person didn’t care about you…because they just lied to you. They only cared about their own needs, and most likely won’t be there for you when you need them most.

Any opportunity you find is only as good as its leaders. I feel very fortunate to be where I am today because, not only do I get to express my own leadership skills, I’m surrounded by like-minded leaders who share the same visions of success I do.

Honesty vs. Deception: The Showdown

There are two ways to do things in this world: Honestly or Deceptively.

While the Internet is riddled with scam artists and virus peddlers, it contains a large amount of honest people as well. These are people just like you and me, looking for news, information, entertainment, connection, sociability, and an escape from a life that consumes the majority of their time.

In the network marketing industry, there are a wide variety of both types of people. There are those who want nothing but your money, then make a mad dash for parts unknown, never to be seen again. It’s people like this that make life harder for the honest networkers.

The scammers try to lurk in the shadows, but they’re pretty easy to spot…especially since the Internet has become so transparent. Scammers don’t provide value to their communities. They spam links to their websites all day, they never attach a human element to anything they do, and like a patient fisherman, they wait for you to take the bait so they can reel you in.

On the flip side of the coin, the honest people are as easy to spot as the scam artists. These are the people who deliver value to those they connect with, they don’t try to sell you their business the first time they meet you, they inject a ton of personality into everything they do, and they genuinely care about you because they realize your success will equal their success.

So here’s the question of the day: Who would you rather work with?

The answer to this question seems downright obvious and I should be docked points just for asking it, right? But there’s a certain mindset that goes along with this question.

If you’re the type of person who’s bringing a lottery mentality to the table, hoping you can get-rich-quick and put no effort into the money you make, then perhaps the scam artist has something to offer you. You face a harsh reality with sort-sighted thinking such as this.

“Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime.”

The scam artists are looking for you, and everyone else, to give them a fish. This way, they can make a quick buck, and vanish into the night like Batman. But once the scammer gets exposed and word gets around, it’s curtains. They have no chance of ever re-establishing themselves.

Meanwhile, an honest leader will not only be looking to teach you to fish, but to share the fishing pole with you so both of you are ensured to eat for a lifetime.

My guess is you’re looking for someone who’s honest and up-front with you. In any aspect of life and business, people associate with others they know, like, and trust. And if the first initial contact made with someone consists of lies and deception, there’s no way trust can ever be established.

Normally, when someone is investigating a network marketing opportunity, one of the first questions they ask of the person they sought out is if they’ve been successful. And the response we’re all trained to look for involves money, because we’re all programmed by society to equate success with dollar figures.

So, if the person responds, “Oh yeah! I’m making money hand over fist! This business is so great,” then later you find out they lied to you, how would that make you feel? You’d feel taken, betrayed, and angry.

Honest people do exist in this industry, and they will answer your questions truthfully. These are the people who care about the success of their team, not just themselves. They’re smart enough to realize that the success of everyone around them will ultimately lead to their success as well. They don’t strive for selfish accomplishments and they lead in a manner that accentuates all the positive features they have to offer their team and the industry as a whole.

On a personal level, I feel blessed to be a part and surrounded by the leadership my current company has in place. It’s practically overflowing with people who have made it their mission to build an honest business through hard work, dedication, developed leadership, and working a system that delivers the goods!

A ‘Short-Cut’ to an Internet Fortune…As Seen On TV

I am a big fan of Comedy Central. I love stand-up comedians and never miss a celebrity roast. Laughter is great for unwinding and decompressing at the end of the day. Thus, this channel reaches my funny bone and relaxes me.

I missed the original airing of one of their new shows that I thoroughly enjoy, Tosh.0, and was skimming through the channel guide so I could find the re-run and record it (gotta love the DVR). In my searches, I came across an infomercial that was set to air at 5:00AM about making millions of dollars on the Internet. I chuckled as I pressed the ‘record’ button. I owed it to myself to see what this was all about.

I awoke the next morning, grabbed my notebook, and flipped on the set. I went to the recorded show and began watching.

I was about 2 ½ minutes into the program when I realized why it was airing on Comedy Central. I hadn’t laughed this hard since the last ‘Reno 911’ marathon.

Its ads like this that give the network marketing industry a bad name. This half-hour was jam-packed with “testimonials” about how “easy” it is to make a fortune online and how you can take advantage of “shortcuts” that will do all the work for you.

Take it from a guy who’s been in network marketing for some time now. There is no shortcut. There is no “easy road to a fortune.” Desired results come from the desire to commit to success.

Allow me to paint a picture of this collaboration of lies and deception:

Two good-looking women who you’ve never heard of are hanging out by pools and sports cars while a collection of “self-made wealthy people” sip daiquiris and mingle behind them. They proceed to interview the creator of this wealth system who goes on a diatribe of the ease of success you’ll have with this system.

The term “all the work is done for you” is thrown around dozens of time.

Then, the ladies begin to take testimonials from various people who, supposedly, ARE NOT ACTORS, about how much they make with this system.

And that’s where it all came unraveled. Some of these people said they’re making over $100k per week. Some made five and six digits in their first WEEK. And this all came with “no work or effort.”

And…they knew NOTHING about the Internet! They just signed up for the system and *POOF*…INCOME!!!

Then, my favorite part, the infomercial staple: “If I can do it, anyone can do it.”

Oh, and let’s not forget…people fly from all over the world and pay tens of thousands of dollars to learn the ways of this system. But today, you can get it for under 50 bucks.

Let’s evaluate, shall we?

First of all, if this is such a ground-breaking, revolutionary means to a lifestyle change and financial freedom that everyone is cashing in on, why is it being aired at 5 o’clock in the morning?

Next, is it possible to make $100k in your first week online? Sure it is. But you’d better expect to work your butt off to do so. You simply can’t sign up for something and expect $100,000 to appear in your bank account. The only way that happens is through the lottery.

Think about it: If it were that easy, wouldn’t every single person in the entire world be doing it? You’d be foolish not to!

Next, true entrepreneurs do not dedicate themselves to a system that “does all the work for them.” True entrepreneurs dedicate themselves to their educations and learning how to run a profitable business. They learn how to deal with people, work with people, and build relationships with people.

Which leads me to my final point: “If I can do it, anyone can do it” is my least favorite phrase in the English language. I literally cringe every time I hear it. To me, this doesn’t show how easy something is…it shows that the person who chooses to say this statement is ignorant to what they truly believe they can accomplish.

This is not the attitude of a leader. This is the attitude of a life-long follower. A leader doesn’t dismiss their responsibility by saying “If I can do it, anyone can do it.” A leader says, “If I can do it, I’m going to show EVERYONE ELSE how to do it, too!”

If you can’t embrace your potential, you don’t belong in the network marketing industry.
Making a living through the Internet and working from home is entirely possible. There certainly are some great success stories out there. Unfortunately, there are more failure stories than I can count, and deceptive infomercials and Internet scams are a big cause. But the overwhelming factor is a person’s inability to learn the basics to running their business.


A true leader and entrepreneur is a student of the game, and stops at nothing to absorb the knowledge that leads to delivering the goods. Why I Fired Myself from MLM

“You’re fired.”

It had to be done. Things just weren’t working out. It was time to go in a different direction.

So I looked in the mirror and said the two words everybody dreads…”You’re fired.”

You may be asking yourself, “Why, Jason? Why would you fire yourself? No one wants to be fired.”

Allow me to elaborate a little bit further.

I’ve been involved in the network marketing industry for roughly two years now. To this industry I brought degrees in Communications and Writing, as well as Leadership. I also brought “Corporate America” experience in sales, marketing, management, leadership, and business development.

But I, like many people, did not know what to fully expect from my first network marketing encounter. I thought the idea was sound, the compensation lucrative, and I bought into a lot of the hype I heard from my upline and company leaders on sizzle calls.

To make a long story short, I was very green and very naïve. I never felt entitled to a fortune, but I thought some sort of results would come my way, even by playing the law of averages. The more people I talked to, the closer I was getting to a yes…right? This was my sales experience coming into play.

I took a lot of the “no’s” I received very personally. I started to become discouraged. There was even a block of time where I did nothing with my business whatsoever. It just sat on the shelf, collecting dust, while I paid my monthly fee to keep it operational.

Then a couple realizations hit me in the face like a sack of oranges. I hated my job. I despised my boss. I couldn’t stand living paycheck-to-paycheck. Trading my precious time for measly wages and pencil-whipped paychecks became something I loathed.

So I did something everyone human being should do in all facets of life: I took action!

I began expanding my education. I began looking for mentors that I could surround myself with and mimic their activities. Instead of wishing I had a huge marketing budget, I accentuated the positives. I started developing my leadership skills and paying closer attention to ways I could be successful in this industry.

Then, it happened. I fell prey to the struggling economy, and the unstable job market hit home. I lost my “9 to 5” job.

Like so many people these days, I was forced to find a way to replace that income. Fortunately, I was in a position to make my back-up plan of a home-based business my primary income stream.

But…despite some success in MLM once I started following and learning from the right people, I simply didn’t see it as a viable system for generating the income I needed to keep my family afloat.

So…I did what needed to be done. I made the executive decision to change the course of my life.

I fired myself from MLM.

So Why Do 97% of Network Marketers Fail?

The network marketing industry has proven to be very lucrative for a handful of people. You see and hear their success stories and it can be a beacon of hope in an otherwise dreary and down-trodden economy and job market.

But unfortunately, these success stories are far outweighed by the number of people who have not been successful in this industry. In fact, 97% fail at MLM…a statistic that is not encouraging to someone looking to get started in this industry.

Network Marketing is a business. And that’s one of the biggest reasons why people do not find success: they treat it like a hobby. A hobby can be a lot of fun and is normally done because it’s something you enjoy. But at the end of the day, you only spend a few hours with your hobby.

Your business is a different animal. You don’t have to commit 70-80 hours a week to your network marketing opportunity. In the same respect, you can’t expect to make a fortune from only a couple hours of work.

One of the major selling points of an MLM is the ability to work the business part-time while still maintaining a normal work schedule. But many people get caught up in this and use it as an excuse not to pour time and effort into their business. You may have worked some overtime at the office this week, and therefore feel the extra income that will come for those extra hours can supplement the income you would make if you put any effort into your business this week.

This begins an evil trend that allows you to become complacent about your business, thus turning it into an expensive hobby.

Another reason 97% fail at network marketing is entitlement. A great deal of people listen to the sizzle calls, see the flashy banners, and listen to their uplines talk about the stacks of money they’re going to make. So, they sign the dotted line and expect the money to pour in. And when it doesn’t, they don’t look for a way to expand their knowledge. They look for someone to blame. And, inevitably, the one who catches the blame is network marketing itself.

When you’re looking for a network marketing opportunity, it’s important to look passed the product, the company, and the compensation plan to see if you’re being sponsored by a leader or if you’re being sponsored by someone who’s looking to make a quick buck.

A leader will be there to mentor, coach, teach, and train you to be successful. They will genuinely care about YOUR success, not their own. Someone looking to make a quick buck will spout company lines and constantly refer to how great the compensation plan is and care for no one but themselves.


A third reason 97% fail in MLM is their lack of commitment to growth and development. Top earners in this industry realize their education never stops, and force themselves to learn something new every single day. Constant expansion of knowledge will lead to higher amounts of success because you absorb knowledge that you can not only apply to your own business practices, but you can pass along to your business partners as well.

Whether you’re looking to join network marketing full-time or simply create a second stream of income to accompany your current job, it’s imperative you recognize one thing: The comp plan, the product, and the flashy websites with people standing next to sports cars with wads of money are worth absolutely nothing if you don’t learn how to effectively market. The Internet is a marketing gold-mine right now, and with the ever-growing popularity of social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, that trend will not fizzle out anytime soon.

Today's Leadership Tip

When developing your leadership abilities, it's important to realize that you're going to make mistakes. Just because you're an effective leaders does not dismiss you from making errors.

However, it's the ability to learn from your mistakes that defines you as a leader. Instead of getting hung up on what you could or should have done, chalk your fouls up as stepping stones. Going forward, use these experiences to enhance not only your own leadership practices, but the practices of your followers as well.

Abraham Lincoln was one of the great leaders in American history, and he was prone to mistakes just like you and I. But "Honest Abe" became a better leader because of those mistakes.

In his book, "Lincoln on Leadership," there were four leadership traits that Lincoln focused on that made him a true transformational leader:

1) People - Lincoln visited troops on the front lines of battle to build relationships with them and make himself seen. A visible leader is more influential then someone who hides behind the scenes.

2) Character - Lincoln was very high on integrity and encouraged his followers not to make rash decisions based on negative response. A leader's character always shines brightest in the face of struggle.

3) Endeavor - Lincoln asked this question: Can we do better? The answer, inevitably, was yes. Leaders put the past behind them and think and act anew. What you think determines what you do, and what you do determines your life. A strong transformational leader makes the decision to move forward and encourages everyone around them to do the same.

4) Communication - Lincoln mastered the art of public speaking. Effective communication skills are a crucial weapon in a leaders' arsenal. Leaders develop a style of communication their followers can embrace and get behind.

Transformational leaders create positive change for themselves and their followers.

Today's Goal: Find your "inner-Lincoln" and become the transformational leader you deserve to be.

Trump Watch: Is ‘The Donald’ Ready to Conquer Network Marketing?

Donald Trump is poised to make his mark on the Multi-Level Marketing (MLM), or network marketing, industry, and many people with their eyes on running a lucrative home-based business are looking to leverage the Trump name into a self-made fortune.

Trump has gone on record in stating that if he had to make his fortune all over again, he would do it through the network marketing industry. He sees the real opportunity it offers people and, being a self-made millionaire himself, has the entrepreneurial mindset that’s required to tackle such a daunting task.

With that being said, it’s important to look at this opportunity from all angles. Yes, this particular one bears the Trump name, which is something no other network marketing opportunity can say. But when the smoke clears and the pre-launch concludes, what will make the Trump Network stand apart from every other network marketing company in the world?

I’ve talked to a few individuals about the Trump Network opportunity and, as most people are when a new company prepares to launch, each of them are very excited and raring to tear the walls down and light the world on fire. This excitement and buzz is on par with every other network marketing opportunity out there, with Trump’s name being the only difference.

In addition, Trump’s program offers a very similar compensation plan and product to others already in existence, as well as a relatively low start-up cost (under $500). Again, this mirrors other MLM companies, but other companies don’t have Trump’s name tied to it.

The low start-up price is a double-edged sword. On the positive side, it allows people who don’t have a lot of start-up capital the opportunity to start their own business. But on a negative note, it doesn’t necessarily attract just serious “entrepreneurs,” but those with a “get-rich-quick” or “lottery” mentality as well. Without question, some people will excel. But a greater number face the risk of making little to no money at all because they don’t know how to truly market a business. They’re simply relying on Trump to do that for them.

The people I’ve spoken to about the Trump Network are very happy with the business model in place, but seem to be relying too much on the success Donald Trump’s name carries. This is very scary, as the Trump name can only go so far. Yes, he’s a world-renowned figure, but not every individual has the mindset he does. If that were the case, we’d all have struck it rich in real estate by now.

OK, let’s fast-forward and say you’ve decided to get started with the Trump Network. Your first goal is to sponsor five people. Seems simple enough, right? Everyone is going to want to be apart of this opportunity, because it’s Donald Trump’s!

Not so fast. Unfortunately, network marketing doesn’t work this way. If it did, every one in the world would be a rich, home-based business owner.

Despite your view of the Trump opportunity being the greatest thing since sliced bread, not everyone you speak to is going to feel the same way. Many people are content in their own little comfort zones. Others may find another opportunity they’re more passionate about. And some simply don’t care at all.
