What Do Leaders Tweet About?
The Leadership Blitz
October 27th, 2009
Twitter has quickly risen to the top of the ranks as one of the most popular social networks on the web. Not only has it established itself as an excellent place for people to connect, it's also become many user's source for news and information.
The simple premise of a 140 character or less message makes it very simple to get a quick, succinct message across and introduce followers to quotes, content, and relevant and useful information that can increase knowledge.
Like all social networks, there's a right way and a wrong way to use the service. The wrong way is to spam links to websites that only lead to personal gain for the "tweeter." Behavior like this has led to the suspension of countless accounts and gotten many blacklisted in the Twitterverse.
Many leaders have turned to Twitter to gain and share insight on a variety of topics, including life, business, leadership, sales, marketing, and more. If you're connecting with the right people, you can achieve answers to any questions, in any niche, at any time of the day.
Have you taken the time to notice what the leaders are truly tweeting about? Yes, there are still Twitter users out there who do not intend to change their ways and provide little to no value to the reader. However, if you sift through the garbage, you're likely to find treasures that can benefit you in a great way.
Your objective is to establish yourself as a leader in your niche. To accomplish this task, it's important to mimic the behavior of leaders who have laid the groundwork before you. If you've chosen to use Twitter as a part of your efforts, below if what the leaders on Twitter are tweeting about:
1) VALUE! - I list this at Number One and stress it as the most important because leaders do not tweet spam. Leaders realize their success is not 100% about them. As a leader, your goal is to affect the lives of as many people as possible on a daily basis. By tweeting spam, you're wasting your audience's time and, over time, damaging your reputation. Your tweets should offer something of value to the reader. For example, access to valuable information, a great quote, or a question that sparks conversation are great tweets. Tweet after tweet with links to your opportunity will be overlooked by the majority of the Twitterverse.
2) LIFESTYLE - Many people belong to the school of thought that teaches money is everything, but the long and short of it is this: People don't care about money. They care about the lifestyle money offers. Leaders don't send tweets that say "I earned $35,092.84 in one month, and so can you," then include a link to their opportunity. I believe I speak for the majority when I say I don't care what you earned last month. Someone is attractive to me because they've created a lifestyle that allows them to spend time with their families, travel, or do the things they love. Tweet about that. Don't tweet about income claims.
3) RESOURCES - I mentioned value earlier, and there's nothing more valuable than a resource you've come across that can help people in numerous ways. A free report, an e-book, a great article or video...none of this is off limits, as long as the information is relevant and can affect someone, even if it's in the smallest of ways. If it affected you, chances are it will affect your audience as well.
4) INTRIGUING QUESTIONS - Everyone loves a good conversation, and the best conversations are usually started by a great question that makes people think. Be the person who starts the conversation! Think of a question you may not have all the answers to or something you believe in strongly. Send a tweet to your audience with an intriguing question, make them put on their thinking caps, and watch the insight explode!
5) INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES - Each of us is inspired in different ways, and time-honored quotes from past leaders can affect your audience profoundly. If you come across a quote that inspires you or gets you thinking, again, chances are it will do the same thing for your audience. Tweet it!

Here's a simple rule of thumb: People aren't going to Twitter looking for the next big business opportunity. They're going there for information, connectivity, and insight on how they can improve their situations. Therefore, use Twitter to provide value, and you'll become a more attractive leader!
