Did You Make New Years "Resolutions" or "REVOLUTIONS?!"
Resolution [res-uh-loo-shuh n] - noun: a resolve or determination; to make a firm resolution to do something; the act of resolving or determining upon an action or course of action, method, procedure, etc.
Revolution [rev-uh-loo-shuh n] - noun: a sudden, complete, or marked change in something
It's crazy how much of a difference one letter makes.
The turn of a new year and new decade has came and gone, and most people have returned to their every day lives. The holiday decorations are down, and the New Year's party is nothing more than a memory.
The new year always brings about the opportunity to make changes, and most people use January 1st to recover from the night before, as well as think of areas of their life in which they can improve. But come February, the majority of those hopes for change have long been forgotten.
The problem with a resolution, as indicated in the definition above, is the fact that it's merely thought. Thoughts can be great motivators for a better today and brighter tomorrow, but cease to become anything more than that until they're transformed into action.
I've talked to several people in my life who fall into the category of "all smoke and no fire." This translates to a lot of talk, but no action to back up their words. They want big things, they want fancy cars, they feel they deserve better than what they currently have. But ask them what they've done to move towards those goals and they stare at your blankly.
If you have a problem with self-accountability or entitlement, chances are you've:
A) Never truly stuck to and accomplished a New Years resolution
B) Never truly gotten what you've wanted out of life
Today, let's be bold and throw "resolutions" out the window. If you've already made a list of the things you want to accomplish this year, great. If you haven't, what are you waiting for?
But as of this very moment, your resolutions will now be known as "REVOLUTIONS" (just cross out the first 's' and replace it with a 'v' if you physically made a list).
If you refer back to the definitions at the top, "revolutions" are all about change through action. Your resolutions, whether they're as simple as reading five more pages of an informative book a day or as life-altering as quitting smoking or getting into better shape, need to be viewed from the standpoint that if they're accomplished, they're REVOLUTIONARY!
There's no reason your goals shouldn't mean that much to you.
If you look at the Industrial and Cultural Revolutions in our history books, they are categorized as "revolutions" because they mark a distinct, sudden, and complete change in the fabric of society going forward.
Your goals are no different. Accomplishing your "revolutions" should mark a distinct, sudden, and complete change in YOU!
And if they don't, you're only kidding yourself, and 2010 will be a carbon copy of every year you've had before it.
Be bold in 2010. Start your own revolution and finally get everything you've always wanted out of life! Take action and make it happen!
