A Kick-Ass, Focused Definition on Leadership
Leadership takes on many different forms and comes with many different definitions. How it's interpreted, accepted, understood, and utilized is all in the eye of the beholder.
Today I heard a great definition for leadership that I immediately adopted for all my actions going forward. It came from the great John Jackson, a mentor to me and thousands of other entrepreneurs. I've mentioned John several times on this blog before and don't start my day without listening to his daily leadership calls.
Today's leadership definition is simply this: Focused Action in the Direction of a Worthy Purpose.
This definition is a reminder that we all need to be bigger than the problems that stare us in the face on a daily basis. As leaders, we have numerous people counting on us for guidance, advice, and insight. Constantly shining the spotlight on problems instead of developing solutions can hinder our leadership qualities.
In addition, the goals we set for ourselves must be far greater than the obstacles that stand in the way of their accomplishment.
A tremendous obstacle for many people is debt. On the surface, it would appear the fundamental reason for generating more wealth would be to get out of debt. While alleviating debt is very important, it's merely one of the stepping stones en route to a much more vast and greater prize.
At least it should be.
Ask yourself what your worthy purpose is. A debt-free life is certainly a great accomplishment, but isn't the possibility of positioning yourself to spend more time with your family more important? Especially if eliminating debt from your life allowed you to do just that.
Or what if you love to travel and reliquishing the stranglehold debt has on you would create the opportunity to explore the globe?!
The point is this. Yes, debt, or any other obstacle life throws in front of you, may be staring you in the face every single day. And yes, you'd like nothing more than to kick it in the gut and get it out of your life forever.
But if your goals are set on higher achievements, you're going to wrestle that gorilla on your back to the ground anyway while creating the life you've always wanted for yourself.
It's all about wanting to be bigger and better, mentally envisioning being bigger and better, then implementing the proper action steps to become bigger and better.
At the end of the day, money is just ink on paper. But the lifestyle that comes along with money is the ultimate prize that all leaders strive for.
When you set goals for yourself, remember these three elements:
1) Think BIG! - Look past the problems in your life TODAY and focus on what you want your life to be TOMORROW
2) Dream BIG! - With action, your dreams can become reality. Mentally create that world for yourself and stop at nothing to get it
3) Take BIG Action! - FOCUSED action on what your future will hold if you go to work and write your own success story!
